Pregnancy Brain is not something to worry about pregnant women
Pregnant women often become senile about something that is possible when not pregnant is not a problem. For example, when walking into a room but then forget what to do in that room, forget where to put an object, or even forget the names of certain objects. Senility is so closely accompanying the days of pregnant women is not a pleasant thing. This condition is described by the term pregnancy brain, which is a weakness in the plural memory of pregnant women.
Actually the term pregnancy brain or decreased sharpness of the mother's mind power has not been clinically proven. However, this is very common in pregnant women or those who have just given birth. This condition can even occur in pregnant women who are intelligent and highly educated though. Several studies conducted showed that pregnancy turned out to have a slight relationship with decreased memory power in the mother.
The cause of pregnancy brain may be due to the following reasons.
- Sleep deprivation and multitasking. It has become a part of normalcy that pregnant women experience sleep problems. As the stomach gets bigger, sleep can become more difficult because of increased body metabolism, frequent urination, fetal movements, and leg cramps at night. In addition, there are many things that must be done and remembered by pregnant women, ranging from prenatal care, birth plans, office work, household chores, and others. Studies show that the brain is unable to process two mental tasks at once. A productivity expert says that when a person turns his attention back and forth between two things, it takes the brain work four times longer to process what it is working on. A neuropsychologist explains that when a person experiences sleep deprivation and often does many things at once, he is at risk of experiencing memory problems. Not only in the pregnancy period, after childbirth, pregnancy brain can continue due to lack of sleep. Mothers can experience insufficient sleep for up to 700 hours during the first year after giving birth. This makes the brain work less well in addition to matters of the baby.
- Experience hormonal changes. In pregnant women, increased levels of the hormones progesterone and estrogen up to 15-40 times higher have an impact on the performance of the nervous system in the brain.
- Stress faces big changes in life. When pregnant, the brain becomes busy preparing you mentally to become a parent. Most expectant mothers will spend a lot of time imagining changes in their lives when they have to care for, breastfeed, and raise their children. Research shows that short-term stress during pregnancy, can affect memory endurance. Studies have also shown that short-term memory problems during pregnancy may be related to feelings of depression.
- Shifting priorities of the mother. Neuropsychiatric experts say that pregnant women have many mind divisions in their brains with the largest part of them filled with matters relating to babies. So, it is natural that other things become forgotten.
